CountyLineJanuary2014www.CountyLineMagazine.net18ReynoldsEdwardDensmoreIIIwasbornandraisedinAnnArborMichigan.Withthreeoldersistersandayoungerbrothertheparentsofthisclose-knitfamilyinstilledasenseofpublicserviceintheirchildrenthroughexample.EdsfatherandgrandfatherweremembersofthecitysvolunteerFireDepartmentthathisgrandfatherhadhelpedtofound.HisuncleandcousinworkedfortheWashtenawCountySheriffsOfce.WhenEdstartedcollegeatMichiganStatehewasrequiredtodeclareamajorandunsureofwhathewantedtofocusonhestartedoutinBusiness.WithinthatrstyearheswitchedtoAccountingbutaftertakingacourseinCriminalJusticeherealizedthatthiswaswhatinterestedandmotivatedhim.In1988EdgraduatedwithaBachelorofScienceinCriminalJusticewithplanstoapplytoPoliceandSheriffsDepartments.ManyofhishighschoolandcollegefriendshadmovedtoAtlantaandEddecidedtojointhemandstarthisfutureinanewcity.WhileapplyingtoandtakingtestsforapositionwithalawenforcementagencyEdtookajobwithMacysintheirInternalInvestigationsdivision.Twoyearslaterhebecameapatrolof-cerwiththeCityofDecatur.Hewasassignedtowork11pmto7amandwasoffonTuesdayandWednesday.ThesehoursweredifcultonmeandmadeithardformetohaveasociallifesaidEd.Neverbeingoffduringthedayoronweekendsputalotofstressonmemyfamilyandmyfriends.ButevenwithhisdifcultscheduleitwasduringthistimethatEdmethisfuturewifeoftwenty-twoyearsAllisonwhowasafederalagentwiththeImmigra-tionandNaturalizationServicenowknownasHomelandSecurity.AfterworkingfortheCityofDecaturforthreeyearsEdtookapositionasapatrolofcerfortheCityofAlpharetta.Itwas1994andtheareawasexperiencingincrediblegrowth.Isawthisasanopportunitytogrowwiththedepartmentandtolearnabouteveryfacetoflawen-forcementbydoingtheworkandgainingtheexperience.AftersixmonthsEdtookthetesttobepromotedtosergeantandthoughhescoredveryhighthedepartmenthadastipula-tionthattherewerenopromotionsduringtherstyearprobationperiodsohehadtowaitanadditionalsixmonthstotakethetestagain.Asasergeanthecontinuedtoworkasapatrolofcerandtookontheadditionalresponsibilityofworkingwithnewhiresastheireldtrain-ingofcer.HewasthenselectedtoestablishtheCommunityOrientedPoliceServiceCOPSadivisionthatdevelopedrelationsbetweenthepolicedepartmentandthecommunity.HelaunchedtheneighborhoodandbusinesswatchprogramsbeforemovingontotheOfceofProfessionalStandardsandthenontoPublicInformationOfcerworkingasamediarepre-sentative.DuringmostofthistimehewasalsoamemberoftheS.W.A.T.SpecialWeaponsandTacticsteam.HisnexttransitionwastotheCriminalInvestigationDivisionandhealsobeganassistingwiththeTrainingUnit.Edcompletedan80-hourcoursetobecomeaCertiedGeneralInstructoranda40-hourcoursetobecertiedasaFirearmsInstructor.Hetakesa20-hourcourseeachyeartoberecertied.PromotedtoLieutenantEdsnextmovewasintotheTrafcSafetyUnit.MovingfromtheoperationssideoflawenforcementhewaspromotedtoCommanderandmovedintotheadministrativesideworkingonstatecerticationsna-tionalaccreditationsbudgetsandpolicy.HewaspromotedtoDeputyChiefandthenChiefofPoliceoftheCityofAlpharetta.HehadbeentheChiefforayearandahalfwhenheappliedforthepositionofChiefofPoliceoftheCityofJohnsCreek.The14yearsthatIspentworkingfortheCityofAlpharettaprovidedmewiththeopportu-nitytolearnlawenforcementthroughhands-onexperienceindifferentdepartmentsandpo-sitionsbothoperationalandadministrativesaidEd.BecauseIhadrecentlybeenpromotedtoChiefofPoliceitwasadifcultdecisionformetoconsiderleavingbutIthoughtitwouldbeanexcitingcareermovetohavetheopportunitytobuildthePoliceDepartmentforthenewlyformedCityofJohnsCreek.Allisonwasverysupportiveandencouragedmetoapply.IknewthatIhadtoatleasttrytomakethishappenformeandformyfamily.Heputinhisapplicationinthesummerof2007wasofferedandacceptedthepositionasChiefofPoliceinNovemberandlaunchedtheJohnsCreekPoliceDepartmentinApril2008. 19CountyLineJanuary2014UsingtheexperiencehehadgainedworkingfortheCityofDecaturandtheCityofAlpharettaChiefDensmoreinstitutedpoliciesthathethoughtwouldcreatetheoptimumworkenviron-mentandenablehimtorecruitandretainthebest.Heclearlyrememberedthedifcultyofworkingwithnoweekendsoffandcreatedascheduleforpatrolofcerstoworkthatrotatedeverytwoweeks.Oneweektheofcerworksa12hourshiftonMondayandTuesdayisoffWednesdayandThursdayandworksonFridaySatur-dayandSunday.ThenextweektheyareoffonMondayandTuesdayworkWednes-dayandThursdayandareoffonFridaySaturdayandSunday.Therotationneverchangessoeveryofcercanplanaheadforweekendac-tivitiesandvacations.Healsoinstitutedamonthlyhous-ingstipendof500foreveryofcertobeabletoliveinJohnsCreekandtobearesi-dentofthecommunitytheyserve.Thesebenetshavebeenextremelysuccessfulinrecruitingandretainingem-ployeesobservedEd.OneoftheprimaryreasonstheCityofJohnsCreekwasformedwastoestablishclosertiestoservicesfortheresidentsandbusinessownersinthecommunity.OurgoalwasfortheJCPDtonotjustbepartofourcommunitybutrathertoweaveourselvesintothefabricofthecommunity.EdcontinuestolearnasmuchashecanaboutlawenforcementandappliesandshareswhathelearnswiththosewhoworkfortheJCPD.Heattendeda10-weekcourseattheFBINationalAcademyandhevisitedIsraelthroughtheGeorgiaLawEnforcementExchangepro-gramthatfocusesonenhancinginter-agencycooperationbetweenlawenforcementagenciesinGeorgiaandthepoliceforceinIsrael.HeisaCertiedLawEnforcementAssessorfortheCommissiononAccreditationforLawEnforcementAgencies.TheJCPDiscertiedeverythreeyearsunderthisProgramandasanassessorChiefDensmorevisitsotherPoliceDepart-mentsaroundthecountryatleastthreetimesayear.WhenheisnotatworkEdisanavidoutdoorsmanwhoenjoyshuntingandshingespe-ciallyyshing.OnweekendsheandAllisonoftenridethroughthebackroadsofnorthGeorgiaonhisHarley.Theirsixteen-year-olddaughterRileyisasophomoreinhighschoolwhohasplannedtofollowinherfatherslawenforcementfootstepssinceshewasalittlegirl.EdcoachesRileystravelingfastpitchteamandcoachedhermiddleschoolfeederteam.Nineteen-year-oldsonRenisafreshmanatGeorgiaSoutherninterestedincontinuinghiseducationandpursuingacareerinSportsTherapy.IwasveryblessedtojointheAlpharettaPoliceDepartmentatatimewhenthecityandthedepartmentwererapidlygrowingsaidEd.TheopportunitiesavailableformetolearnandexperiencelawenforcementpreparedmetobeabletobuildlaunchandcontinuetooverseetheoperationsoftheJohnsCreekPoliceDepartment.IbelievethatthepoliciesandproceduresIinstitutedhavebeensuccessfultheDepartmenthasa98retentionrateofitsemployeesandisanintegralpartoftheJohnsCreekcommunity.ChiefEdDensmorehasaccomplishedhismissionandisproudthattheJohnsCreekPoliceDepartmentexempliesitsmottoStrivingtosetthestandardallotherswillchoosetofollow.OneoftheprimaryreasonstheCityofJohnsCreekwasformedwastoestablishclosertiestoservicesfortheresidentsandbusinessownersinthecommunity.OurgoalwasfortheJCPDtonotjustbepartofourcommunitybutrathertoweaveourselvesintothefabricofthecommunity.ChiefEdDensmore
