CountyLineJanuary2015www.CountyLineMagazine.net10Whenthe2014-15schoolyearbeganlastfallGailJohnsonstartedhernewpositionasprincipalofJohnsCreekHighSchool.Aswithmanyteachersthatmoveontotheadministra-tivesideofeducationGailknewthatshewantedtobeateacherandaprincipalsinceshewasalittlegirl.AsshesaysIcantrememberatimewhenIdidntknowthatIwantedtobeineducation.Igrewuproleplayingtheteacherandmakingmylittlesisterplaythestudent.GailwasbornandraisedinPhiladelphiathesecondtotheyoungestofvechildren.ShealwayslovedtoreadbutitwasherEnglishteacherinhersenioryearofhighschoolwhoinuencedherdecisiontomajorinEnglishincollege.Hechosegreatnovelsforustoreadandwassointerestingandengagingsheremembers.IthoughtIwanttodowhathedoes.GailwenttoTempleUniversitygraduatedwithaBachelorofSciencedegreeinSecondaryEnglishEducationandwascertiedtoteachgrades6-12.AsachildGailsparentsdivorcedandasaresultshegrewupinalowincomebracket.Whenlookingforapositionshesoughtoutalowincomeurbanenvironmenttohavetheopportunitytohelpstudentswhowereinthesamesituationshehadbeenin.HerrstjobwasasanEnglishLanguageArtsteacheratamiddleschoolinCamdenNewJersey.DuringthesixyearsthatItaughtthereIespeciallyenjoyedassigningTheOutsidersandWestsideStorytothesestudentsbecausetheyreallyenjoyedreadingabouttheconictbasedongroupperceptioninthesenovels.IfeltthatthekidsconnectingtothematerialthatIpresentedwasareectiononmyabilityasateachersoIlookedforbooksthattheycouldrelatetosaidGail.In1994GailvisitedfriendsinAtlantaandmadethedecisiontomovehere.Ihadalwayslivedwithin50milesofhomeandIthoughtitwastimeformetostartanewadventureinadifferentareaofthecoun-try.GailworkedatanelementaryschoolinUnionCityforayearbeforemovingtoamiddleschoolintheAtlantaPublicSchoolsdistrictwhereshespentthenextfouryears.ShemarriedhadherdaughterMeganandmovedtoCherokeeCounty.Thecom-mutewastakinguptimethatGailfeltshecouldbespendingwithMegansoshemadethedecisiontoac-ceptapositionclosertohomeatanalternativehighschoolmiddleschoolinCantonwhereshestayedforsixyears.In2001GailwasawardedCherokeeProudtobeaPrincipalbyJudyLeJeune 11CountyLineJanuary2015CountyTeacheroftheYearwhichsherecallsasthecatalysttopursuingacareerinadministration.GailwenttoKennesawStateUniversityandin2005shecompletedaMastersdegreeinEduca-tionalLeadership.Thatsameyearshetookthepo-sitionofAssistantAdministratoratCampbellHighSchool.ThenextyearshebecameAssistantPrinci-palforCurriculumandInstructionatOsborneHighSchoolwhereshestayedforthenextveyears.In2011GailbecametheprincipalatCampbellMiddleSchool.AftertwoyearsinthispositionGailwentbacktoKennesawStatetocompleteatwoyearpro-gramtoearnadegreeinEducationalLeadershipforLearning.AcomponentoftheprogramwasbeingassignedanexecutivecoachwhoGailworkedwithtocreateapathtowardherlifelongdreamtobeahighschoolprincipal.InMay2014Gailcompletedthedegreeandstart-edinterviewingforajobasahighschoolprinci-pal.ThepositionofprincipalatJohnsCreekHighSchoolwasavailableandshemetwithapanelofteachersparentsbusinessleadersandstudentsfollowedbyaninterviewwiththeareasuperinten-dentandthenwithFultonCountySchoolsSuperin-tendentDr.RobertAvossa.Theprocessmademefeelextremelycomfortablewiththisschoolsystembecausetheythoroughlyvettedcandidates.Iwasimpressedwiththeprocessandhonoredtoacceptthepositionwhenitwasofferedtome.GailsaidJohnsCreekisahighschoolwithanex-cellentreputationandthecreditforthisgoestothestaffstudentsparentsandbusinessesthatsupporttheschool.Thecommunityembracedthisschoolwhichisanattractiontoparentswhomovetothisareasotheirchildrencanattendhere.IamhonoredthattheJohnsCreekHighSchoolcommu-nitybelievesinmeandinourschool.Educationcanbeatime-consumingandchallengingcareer.Know-ingthatwhatIdoismakingstudentslivesbetterhassustainedmethroughoutmycareer.Mydaugh-terisproudofmyprofessionandthatisalsoaveryrewardingresultofwhereIamtoday.Iamproudtobeaprincipal.EQUALHOUSINGOPPORTUNITY CountyLineJanuary2015www.CountyLineMagazine.net18GENEVIEVEAUCOINIn2007GenevieveAucoinwasnishingsecondgradeatAbbottsHillElementaryandlookingforwardtothesummer.Duringtheyearshehadrecurringstrepthroatbutotherthanthatshefeltne.AtherFirstCommunionhermothernoticedthatGenevievelookedpaleinherwhitedressbutwhentheschoolsecretaryalsono-ticedthatGenevievelookedpalehermothertookhertothepediatrician.BloodtestsshowedthatGenevievewasanemicwhichisunusualforachildsoshewassenttotheEmergencyRoomatChildrensatScottishRite.AftertestingthereGen-evievewassenttoapediatriconcologistforatestofherbonemarrowthatcamebackwiththediagnosisthatshehadleukemia.Thegoodnewswasthatitwascaughtveryearlyandhadnotspreadtootherpartsofherbody.Genevievebeganaregimenofchemotherapytreatmentthatcontinuedoverthenexttwoyears.Therstyearshemissedalotofthethirdgradeandwasinandoutofthehospitalwithahighfeveroralowimmunesystemcausedbythechemotherapy.AhugefanoftheHarryPotterbooksandmoviesatthecompletionofhertreatmentGenevievewasgrantedatriptoLondonbyTheChildrensWishFoundationInternationaltovisitplacesthatwereusedtolmthemovies.GenevievestartedgoingtoCampSunshineforchildrenwithlife-threateningdiseaseswhenshewasnineyearsold.Ithelpedhertomakeconnectionswithotherchildrengoingthroughthesamething.Forthepasttenyearsshehasspenthersummersthereasacamperandacoun-selor.GenevieveisasophomoreattheUniversityofAlabamaandismajoringinMusicTherapy.Shehasbloodworkdoneannuallytotestforlong-termeffects.COLLIERCAYCEThirteen-year-oldCollierCaycewasveryathleticsowhenhismomnoticedabumponhisrightshintheyboththoughtitwasaninjuryfromplayingsports.Collierhadjuststartedeighthgradeandwasonhismiddleschoolsfootballteamandplayedbasketballafterschoolwithfriends.HecamehomeoneafternoonwithswellinginhisrightcalfandColliersmomKKdecidedtotakehimtothepediatricianwhotoldthemtogototheEmergencyRoomatChildrensatScottishRite.Thereanx-rayshowedananomalyandthenextdaytheywerecontactedbyanoncologistfromChildrensAacCancerCenterwhotoldthemtocomeinforanMRI.ThedayaftertheMRItheoncologistcalledagaintoletthemknowtherewasamassinCol-lierslegthatneededtobebiopsied.OnSeptember212012theyweretoldthathistumorwasmalignant.Collierhadasarcomainhiscalfthatwasattachedtohistibiabone.ItwasEwingSarcomaarareformofbonecancerthatprimarilyaffectsyoungchildrenandadolescents.ScansshowedthatthecancerhadspreadtoCol-lierslungs.FromOctober2012toJuly2013Collierhadmorethan50chemother-apytreatments31radiationtreatmentsonhiscalfand10radiationtreatmentsonhislungs.Hespent54nightsinthehospitalmostforchemotherapyandsometotreatafeverandlowbloodcountswhitebloodcellsandplatelets.SomedayshewouldhavechemotherapyatScottishRiteandradiationatEmorysWinshipCancerCenterbeingtransportedbetweenthetwohospitalsbyambulance.CollierisenjoyingbeingasophomoreatLambertandabletosocializewithhisfriends.Heworksouttwotimesaweekwithapersonaltrainer.Collierhasfollow-upscanseverythreemonths. 19CountyLineJanuary2015MEREDITHMCBEEItwasthelastweekofeleven-year-oldMeredithMcBeesfthgradeyearwhenshebegantofeelseverepaininherleftkneeandnoticedthatitwasswollen.AvisittotheEmergencyRoomatChildrensatScottishRiteledtoareferraltoanorthopedicspecialist.Anx-rayofMeredithskneeshowedatumorthatwasthenbiopsiedanddiagnosedasamalignantosteosarcoma.Shewasscheduledtohave18chemotherapytreatments.InlateJuneMeredithwastohavesurgerytoinsertaportandapiclinetoadministerhertreatmentsbutthepainshewasexperiencinghadbecomeexcruciating.Anx-rayrevealedabreakinhertibia.Shehadsurgerytoattempttosaveherlegthatincludedremovingthetumorakneereplacementandreplacingpartofherfemurwithatitaniumrod.Meredithbeganherchemotherapyandhavingtolearntowalkagainandhaveexibilityinherlegshebeganexten-sivephysicaltherapy.OverthenextfewyearsMeredithhadsurgeriestolengthenherlegandtobeabletobendherknee.PriortogoingintohersenioryearMeredithhadanothersurgerytoremovescartissueandcorrectmuscleproblems.Awoundfromthesurgerybecameseverelyinfectedandthoughshetookantibioticstheinfectioncontinuedandcausedhertoloseweightandbeextremelytired.KnowingthatherlegwouldhavetobeamputatedMeredithwasdeterminedtomakethemostofhersenioryear.AndshedidShehadarigorousacademicschedulewaspresidentofBetaClubnewseditoroftheschoolpaperandvicepresidentofherseniorclass.MeredithslegwasamputatedinJuly2014.MeredithwasacceptedtoSouthernMethodistUniversitybutdeferreduntil2015.Shewillreceiveallthescholarshipsshewaspreviouslyawarded.MADISONWINNIn2007MadisonWinnhadjustnishedherfreshmanyearatWesleyanSchoolandwaslookingforwardtocheerleadingpracticeandhangingoutwithfriendsoverthesummer.Severaltimesduringpracticeshehadsevereheadachesandalmostblackedout.ThenwhileatafriendssleepoverpartyMadisongotaheadachethatwassopainfulhermotherSuewascalledtopickherup.SuetookMadisontotheEmergencyRoomatEmoryJohnsCreekHospitalwhereaCATscanwasperformed.Thescanshowedamassthatwasamedulloblastomathemostcommontypeofchildhoodbraintumorandwateronthebrainknownashydrocephalus.MadisonwastransferredtoChildrensatScottishRite.Ashuntwasinsertedintoherheadtodraintheuidpriortoaneighthoursurgerythatremoved90ofthetumor.TheWinnswerethentoldthatMadisonstumorwasmalignant.ShebeganadailyregimenoffourhoursofchemotherapyatChildrensAacCancerCenterandthendrovetoPiedmontHospitalforradiation.Thisdailyroutinelastedfor31days.Shecontinuedwithsixmonthsofchemotherapytreatmentsthatoftencausedanin-fectionorotherhealthproblems.DuringthatyearMadisonspent220daysinthehospital.Whenthetreatmentswerenishedandshewaswellenoughasurgerywasperformedtoremovetheremaining10ofthetumor.Abiopsyconrmedthatthetreatmentshadbeensuccessful.AsaresultofhertreatmentsMadisonliveswithbalanceissueshearinglossinbothearshypo-thyroidismironoverloadandproblemsprocessinginformation.Madisonisapart-timestudentinherjunioryearatYoungHarrisCollege.SheismajoringinEarlyChildhoodEducation.Shejusttransitionedtoadultstatusforfollow-upcareandgoesonceayeartotestforsecondarycancers. CountyLineJanuary2015www.CountyLineMagazine.net26JohnsCreekspastbeganintheearly19thcenturyinthetradingpostsalongtheChattahoocheeRiverinwhatwasthenCherokeeIndianterritory.ThroughtheyearsthetradingpostsgrewslowlyintocrossroadscommunitieswherepioneerfamiliesRogersMcGinnisFindleyBuiceCowartMedlockandothersgatheredtovisitandselltheircrops.Todayremindersofthoseearlyfarmingfamiliesarestillwithusaswetravelalongstreetsandbridgesnamedafterthem.By1820thecommunityofSheltonvillenowknownasShakeragwasaferrycrossingsitewiththeMcGinnisFer-ryandRogersFerrycarryingpeopleandlivestockacrosstheriverforasmallfee.FurthersouthontherivertheNesbitFerrydidthesamenearanothercrossroadscom-munityknownasNewtown.Inthe1820sthediscoveryofgoldinthefoothillsofNorth-eastGeorgiainsidetheCherokeeNationapproximately45milesnorthoftodaysJohnsCreekledtoAmericasrstGoldRushtheeventualtakeoveroftheNationbytheUSGovernmentin1830andthesubsequentforcedightTrailofTearsofCherokeeIndianstoOklahomaandotherareasofthewest.AfewCherokeesremainedthemostfamousbeingSarahCordery1785-1842thehalf-bloodCherokeewifeofpio-neerJohnRogers1774-1851andtheir12childrenin-cludingWilliamRogers1805-1870whofoughtforCher-okeerightsduringthelastyearsoftheNationsexistenceinGeorgia.JohnRogerswasarespectedinuentialplantationown-erIndiancountrymanandcolleagueofPresidentAndrewJackson.Rogers1804hometodayaprivateresidenceinJohnsCreekwasanovernightstopoverforJackson.MuchlaterthehomewasalsovisitedbyfamedjournalistWillRogersthegreatgreatnephewofJohnRogers.In1831muchofthelandintheformerCherokeeNa-tionnorthoftheChattahoocheewasjoinedintoonebigcountycalledCherokee.WhenMiltonCountywasformedin1858theJohnsCreekareawasfoldedintoit.Finallyinthe1930sduringtheDepressionMiltonCountywasdissolvedandallitslandwasabsorbedintoFultonCounty.Bythattimefourmaincrossroadcommunitieshaddevel-opedintothesocialeducationalandbusinesscentersofthisruralunincorporatednortheastFultonCountyOceeNewtownShakeragandWarsaw.TheHistoryofJohnsCreekbyCityofJohnsCreekSeniorCommunicationsManagerRosemaryTaylorTheareaknowntodayasJohnsCreekGeorgiawasonceameetinggroundbetweentherivalCherokeeandCreekPeople.InspiredbytheChattahoocheeRiverthatactedasaboundaryfortheirtribalnationstheyagreedtomaketheJohnsCreekareaasacredplacewherealltribalfamiliescouldfeelsafeduringtheirpeacetalks.TomBlueWolfCreekdescendentFounderEarthKeepersCompanyCourtesyoftheRoswellHistoricalSocietyNewtownElementarySchoolopenedin1929
