CountyLineFebruary2013www.CountyLineMagazine.net18preciationfortheartsthatwillenablethemtocontinuemakingartwhetheritsplayinganinstrumentcreatingvisualartsingingoractingfortherestoftheirlivessaidTim.WhatIlovethemostaboutbeingapartoftheNorthviewOrchestraisthatitsonebigteamworkingtogethertomakebeautifulmusicsaidGenevieveAucoinaviolinistintheOrches-tra.Therearesomanythingsthatgointowhatwedothatpeoplewouldntnecessarilythinkabout.Itsalotofworkandmusicisntalwayseasybutitsdenitelyworthit.ForherandotherstudentsintheOrchestratheopportunitiestoexcelarelimitless.InJanuary2012alltheNorthvieworchestrasStringConcertPhilharmoniaandChamberreceivedSuperiorratingsfortheirLargeGroupPerformanceEvaluationattheGeorgiaMusicEducatorsIn-ServiceConfer-ence.TheNorthviewChamberOrchestrawasinvitedtoperformfortheGeorgiaMusicEducatorsIn-ServiceConferenceinJanuary.Itwastheirthirdappearanceintheschoolstenyearhistory.NineteenmembersoftheOrchestramadeAllStateOrchestraandwillperformwiththeminMarch.TwostudentsviolinistsDavidChyanandSharonKimwerechosentoparticipateintheGovernorsHonorsProgramatValdostaStateUniversitythissummer.InthespiritofcontinuingtoappreciateartGenevieveAucoinwillbemajoringinMusicTherapywhenshestartscollegenextyear.TheNHSBandunderthedirectionofKellyDickersonisatop-notchprogramboasting192studentsenrolledinoneoffourbands.AllfourbandsconsistentlyearnthehighestmarksattheannualLargeGroupPerformanceEvaluationsandsendstudentstoGMEAAllStateBandAllStateJazzBandDistrictVHonorBandFultonCountyHonorBandandGovernorsHonorsPrograms.LastyeartheyhadthelargestnumberofAllStateBandmembersselectedfromtheirprograminthestatewith12studentsparticipating.SincetakingovertheBandprogramin2004KellyhasgrowntheMarchingBandfromapproximately60membersto130membersthisyear.Entirelyvolunteerandnon-competitivetheMarchingBandperformsatallvarsityfootballgamesaswellasatcommunityparades.TheywereinvitedtotheChampsSportsBowlin2009andwillbereturningtoanotherbowlgameinDecember2013.TheBandprogramalsoofferstwoextra-curricularjazzbands.OneofthereasonswhythelegacyoftheBandprogramhereatNHSissocelebratedisbecauseofMrs.DickersonsaidsaxophoneplayerJaeLee.SheisverysupportiveofallofherstudentsandshehashelpedmeinmyendeavorsasacomposerbyndingmecompetitionsthatIcouldparticipateinandallowingmetopremieremyworkintheFallConcert.BrianClementisinhissecondyearasdirectoroftheChorusprogramandisplacinghisfocusontheChorusmemberslearningtosingattheirperformancesindifferentlanguages.ThisyearalonetheChorushasperformedsongsinEnglishIrish-GaelicLatinSlavonicHebrewGer-manFakeSwedishandTolkeinElvish.Mymainpriorityischallengingthestudentsandtheaudiencewithhighqualitydifcultworksthattellastoryandshowthebeautyandpowerinher-entinchoralmusicsaidBrian.Istrivetochallengeourstudentstoconstantlyimproveandgrow.AsChoruspresidentDivyaSukumarassistswithcoordinatingeventsorganizingextra-curriculareventsanddemonstratesthebestofwhattheChorusprogramoffersitsstudents.ChorushasopenedmeuptosomanyopportunitiessuchastheGMEAsAllStateChorusandattendingsucheventshashelpedmegrowasasingerandhasampliedmyloveformusicsaidDivya.TheChorusprogramoffersitsstudentsopportunitiesthatrangefromperformingtheNationalAnthemataGeorgiaStateUniversitybasketballgametoperformingwiththeGeorgiaMusicEducatorAssociationsAllStateChorus.IamcontinuallyimpressedbytheabilitylevelandsheerdesireofthestudentstolearnandabsorbthiswonderfulartformsaidBrian.ThestudentsinVisualArtshavetheopportunitytoentertheirworkinmanyexhibitsandcom-petitionsbothlocallyandnationally.TheyhaveparticipatedlocallyintheArtsontheCreekHighSchoolExhibitandattheHighMuseumSurrealismShow.Nationallytheyhavesubmitted 19CountyLineFebruary2013theirworkfortheDoodleforGoogleartcontestandTheDream50ArtContestanationalcompetitionforK-12studentsfromtencitiesintheU.S.tocommemoratethe50thanniversaryofMartinLutherKingJr.sIHaveaDreamspeech.AkeycomponentofwhytheVisualArtsprogramissogreatisbecausetheartteachersMs.ClawsonandMs.Margolofferstudentsone-on-oneattentionsaidOliviaParkanawardandcontest-winningartstudent.WiththehelpoftheVisualArtsprogramIwonstatelevelfortheDoodleforGooglecontestshowcasedoneofmycollagesintotheannualRoswellJuriedStudentArtShowandwon1stPlaceintheCountyDivisionintheKiwanisArtContestinmyagegroupjusttonameafewofthemanyopportunitiesIhavebeengiven.OurstudentshavebeenNationalandRe-gionalScholasticArtWinnersreceivingHonorableMentionsBlueRibbonsSilverKeysandGoldKeysfortheirartworkorportfolios.TheyhaveachievedhighscoresontheirAPStudioportfoliosandbeenacceptedintotheGovernorsArtProgramsaidFeliceMargol.TherearefouraspectsoftheDramaprogramatNorthviewthatsetitapartfromthebasichighschooltheatreexperiencesaidPaulMcClain.Wehave11-12productionsayearwhichincludesaspringmusicalwehaveawiderangeofclass-roomopportunitieswepartnerwithlocaltheatri-calprofessionalsandourThespiantroupedoesserviceprojectsinourcommunity.Ourprogrampridesitselfinsettinghighstandardsbutavoidingexclusivity.Theatrebelongstoallstudentsandweworktomakecertainallstudentscanexperienceallaspects.StudentsintheprogramrepeatedlyparticipateattheGeorgiaThespianConferencetheGeorgiaHighSchoolAssociationLiteraryCom-petitionandtheGeorgiaHighSchoolAssociationOneActCompetition.RecentlystudentsfromtheprogramperformedattheEdinburghFringeFestivalandatlastyearsGeorgiaHighSchoolAssociationscompetitiontheirperformanceofTheWomenofLockerbiewonRegion3rdPlaceandstudentsfromthisplaywonAll-StarCastMemberandBestSupportingActor.Ilearnsome-thingneweverytimeItakeatheatreclasshereatNorthvieworwhenIaminvolvedinapro-ductionsaidLizMorganaDramaprogramstudent.Everyonethatisinvolvedwiththetheatreprogramincludingstudentsteachersandparentsaresodedicatedtomakethepresentyearbetterthanthelast.ThereareveryfewhighschoolsthattreatthestudentslikeprofessionalsbutluckilyNorthviewisoneofthemThissummerconstructionwillbeginonanewroomfortheBandprogramandalltheteachersintheFineArtsDepartmentarelookingtowardanothergreatyearofperformancescompeti-tionsawardsandopportunitiesforthestudentsintheirprogram.Alltheteacherscontinuetobeactivelyinvolvedintheircraftandtheycontinuetobringtheirenthusiasmandexperiencebacktotheirstudentsintheclassroom.AtNorthviewtheFineArtsDepartmentissomuchmorethanlearningtoplayaninstrumentsinginginachorusperformancepaintingabeautifulpictureoractingoutapartinaplay.TheultimategoaloftheteachersintheFineArtsDepartmentatNorthviewistoinstillineachstudentanappreciationofartforalifetime.Whatwedoishelpourstu-dentstodeveloptheirskillsbutwealsostrivetodevelopwithineachstudentanappre-ciationfortheartsthatwillenablethemtocontinuemak-ingartwhetheritsplayinganinstrumentcreatingvisualartsingingoractingfortherestoftheirlivessaidTim. CountyLineFebruary2013www.CountyLineMagazine.net20DrivingneartheintersectionofMedlockBridgeandBellRoadonecantmissthenewbeaconatopJohnsCreekUnitedMethodistChurchJCUMC.Anewsanctuaryhasbeenunderconstructionsincelate2011.OnOctober122012thelongawaitedsteeplewasraisedandplacedonanewbelltower.OnelongtimememberofJCUMCre-ectedthesentimentsofmanywhenshesaidIvebeenwaitingforthismomentforovertwelveyears.In1987WarsawMethodistChurchandOceeMeth-odistChurchjoinedtogethertoformJohnsCreekUnitedMethodistChurch.Intheearly1990salong-rangeplanningcommitteewasestablishedtoidentifyandplanforthechurchsfacilityneedsforthenext10-12years.By2004JCUMChadbuiltafour-classroomeducationalpodafamily-lifecenterandaChristianeducationbuilding.Anothergoaloftheplanningcommitteeandchurchmemberswasthebuildingofasanctuarythatwouldaccommo-datethegrowingcongregationanditsvisitors.JCUMCbuiltinhopesofexpandinginmembershipandinmissionsharesSeniorPastorRev.D.B.DeeShelnuttJr.Forthepastfteenyearswehaveworshippedinagymnasiumwithnonaturallight.ThegymisusedduringtheweekforWednes-daynightsupperspreschoolactivitiessportseventsandworshiponSunday.TheUnitedMethodistChurchhasstrictrulesregard-ingtheconstructionofanyfacilityonacampus.ABuildingSteeringCommitteemustbeformedandthatcommitteeworkswitharchitectstosubmitaplantothechurchcouncilforpreliminarycosts.WhenthechurchcouncilapprovesthedrawingsandnancialstructuremustgobeforeadistrictcommitteetheAtlanta-RoswellDistrictCommitteeonBuildingsandDevelopmentforJCUMC.Aftertheyapprovethechurchmustcallachurchconferencewhereeverymemberhasavote.Whenthemem-bersapprovethearchitectsandcontractorsdothenaldrawingsandallbankloanscanbesecured.InMay2007JCUMClaunchedafundraisingcam-paigncalledRaisingtheSteeplewithhopesofcompletingthenewsanctuaryby2009.Notlongafterthecampaignbegantheeconomycrashed.Manychurchmemberslostjobshomesandsomehadtomoveaway.Thebuildingprojectwasputonholdforseveralyearsandsomethoughtthesanctu-arymightneverbebuilt.Rev.ShelnuttsaidFor-tunatelytheleadersofthechurchstudiednancialwaysofmakingitworkandwewentforward.Ithasbeenatestimonytofaiththatwebuiltintheseturbulentyears.OnarecenttourofthesanctuaryRev.Shelnuttdescribeditassimpleelegance.Thoughthenewspacehasthecapacitytohold1700peopletheoldfacilityheld750itisstillanintimatesetting.Theabundanceofwindowsseveralarestainedglassbringsnaturallightthatwasmissingfromthepreviousworshipspace.Congregantsandvisi-torswillfeelthewarmthofsacredspaceassoonastheywalkinfromthebeautifulgatheringareaoutsidethesanctuarydoors.Manywillbeexcitedtositinthebalconyfromwhichtheviewisspectacular.GreatthoughtandplanninghasbeenapartofeverydetailfromlightxtureshangingfromtheceilingsbyKarenDuffyComeHomeMakeYourselfat CountyLineFebruary2013www.CountyLineMagazine.net24NestledamongthetallpinesofhistoricRo-swellstandsthestatelyhomeofaRevolu-tionaryWarcaptainJamesS.Bulloch.OneofthesixoriginalhomesthatmadeupthesettlementofRoswellBullochHallisanexcellentexampleofGreekRevivalarchitecture.BeyonditsimportanceasanexampleofhistoricalarchitectureandasoneofthersthomesofRoswellBullochHallisfamousforbeingthechildhoodhomeofMittieBullochPresidentTheodoreRooseveltsmotherandthesiteofhernup-tials.TheimportanceofthishouseandtheareagobacktotheCherokeeremoval.WhileworkingfortheBankofDarienRoswellKingwassentintonewlyacquiredCherokeelandinsearchofgoldfollowingthediscoveryofgoldinnearbyDahlonegain1828.KingwassoimpressedwiththeareawhereVickeryCreekrunsintotheChattahooch-eeRiverforitsbeautyaswellasforitspotentialforbringingagricultureandmanufacturingtogetherthatheuprootedmembersofhisownfamilyfromtheGeorgiacoasttosettleinwhathereferredtoastheColony.ThisareawasofciallyestablishedasRoswellin1836.Kingencouragedotherstojoinhiminthisnewsettle-mentandinestablishinghissystemofmillsencom-passedintheRoswellManufacturingCompany.Sixhouseholdsventuredinlandtoliveonthefrontier.RoswellKingbroughtthreeofhisgrownchildrenandtheirfamiliestothesettlement.JoiningtheKingswasJamesS.BullochwithhisfamilyandBullochssisterandherhusbandJohnDunwoody.RoundingoutthefounderswastheArchibaldSmithfamily.CaptainJamesS.BullochbecameastockholderinKingscompanyaswellasamemberoftheBoardofDirectorsandacceptedtheofferof10acresoflandasahomesitefortheconstructionofhishouse.LaterknownasBullochHallthehousewasjustdownthehillfromRoswellKingssonshouse.JamesandhissecondwifeMarthaStewartElliottwidowofU.S.SenatorJohnElliottrelocatedtotheColonywiththeirblendedfamilyofchildrenfrompreviousmarriagesaswellastheirownalongwith6slavesincludingabutlerahousekeeperacoachmanandacook.WhiletheywaitedforBullochHalltobecom-pletedthefamilylivedinaCherokeefarmhousethathadbeenabandonedwhentheCherokeeswerere-movedfromGeorgia.ThehousewasdesignedandbuiltbyWillisBallofConnecticutwhowasalsoresponsibleforthebuild-ingofseveralofthehousesintheColony.HebasedthehouseonabookbyAsherBenjamininaclassicfourroomsoverfourroomsdesign.Skilledcraftsmenandslavelaborperformedtheconstruction.TheRoswellManufacturingCompanywhichwastheheartoftheColonyrstbeganwiththeconstructionofadamonVickeryCreektosupplyenergy.Asaw-millandacottonmillwerebuiltaswellasabrickkilnwhichcuredtheredclaybricksmadebyslaves.Manyofthematerialsmilledwerefortheconstructionofthehomesandusedtreesfromthevirginforestsinthearea.Twobeamsmeasuring54feetlongintheatticofBullochHallareindicativeofthesizeofsomeofthesetrees.AstheneedsofconstructionmaterialsweremetmoreofthemanufacturingturnedtothebyTammyHardenGallowayphotographycourtesyofBullochHallAFRONTIERHOMEINACOLONYBullochHall
