17CountyLineMarch2015In1929NewtownElementarySchoolwasbuiltonlandatthecrossroadsofOldAlabamaandHaynesBridge.Behindandtothewestoftheschoolwere52acresoflandthathadbeenindicatedasafutureparkonaFultonCountymap.In1990inanefforttopersuadetheFultonCountyBoardofCommis-sionerstopurchasethelandandbuildtheparkagroupofparentsformedTheFriendsofNewtownPark.AsaresultoftheeffortsofthiscommunityadvocacygrouptheCountyacquiredthelandandin1997thecommissionersapprovedfundingforPhaseIconstruction.NewtownParkofciallyopenedtothepublicinMay1999.OnDecember12006theparkbecamepartofthenewlyformedCityofJohnsCreek.Sincethenmanyimprovementsandadditionshavebeenmade.CitizensareconstantlytellingushowimpressedtheyarewithhowmuchhasbeendonetoimprovetheparksinceitbecamepartoftheCityofJohnsCreeksaidRecreationManagerKirkFranz.AdditionalparkinghasbeenaddedadogparkParkPlaceatNewtownSchoolwasrenovatedtoserveseniorsandanincredibleamphitheaterwasbuiltin2014.Theseandmanyotherimprove-mentshavemadetheparkanevenmoreusefulandenjoyableplaceforevery-oneinJohnsCreek.TheteamthatkeepsNewtownParksuchawell-runamenityforJohnsCreekiscomprisedofParksDivisionManagerRobbyNewtonwhoisinchargeofmain-tenanceofthefacilitiesandparkimprovementsRecreationManagerKirkFranzwhoisinchargeofprogrammingandsportsactivitiesRecreationProgramCo-ordinatorSunnieMcWalterswhoworkswithKirktoimplementprogramsandactivitiesBrandonAllenwhoisthedirectorofthesportsprogramsandVol-unteerCoordinatorMaggieBarkerwhoisinchargeofprogramsandactivitiesatParkPlace.TodayNewtownParkhassomethingforeveryonewithtwomilesofwalkingjoggingtrailsasmalllakethreemulti-purposeathleticeldstwobasketballcourts13picnicpavilionsandsixtenniscourts.Inadditiontotheseamenitiesthereareprogramsandfacilitiesthatserveeveryonefromchildrentoseniors.byJudyLeJeuneNEWTOWNPARKSomethingforEveryone CountyLineMarch2015www.CountyLineMagazine.net18NewtownRecreationAwiderangeofsportsprogramslacrosseagfootballsoccerbaseballtennisbas-ketballandsummercampprovidepositiveexperiencestochildrenfromtotstoteen-agers.ThemissionofNewtownRecreationistoincreasethequalityoflifebyprovidingpositivesportsexperiencesforallchildrencoachesandparents.NewtownRecreationisaself-supportedself-sustainingnon-protathleticorganizationthatprovidessportsforthecommunitythroughanagreementwiththeCity.KidswholiveahealthylifestyleandplaysportsarebetterstudentsandarelesslikelytododrugssaidNewtownRec-reationDirectorBrandonAllen.OuremphasisisonlearningtobepartofateamandtoservethekidsinJohnsCreekthroughsports.IfeelfortunatethatNewtownRecreationhasanagreementwiththeCitytoprovidethesesportsopportunitiesandtobeabletoworkwithKirkandRobby.AmphitheaterIn2012planswereinplacetobuildanamphitheaterintheparktoprovideavenueforCity-sponsoredandlarge-groupevents.Inearly2013JohnsCreekCityCouncilmembersreturnedfromaretreatwitharequesttoaddastageandterracedseating.ThePublicWorksmanagementteambrainstormedtoincreasethesizeandscopeoftheamphitheatersaidRobbyNewton.Theexpecta-tionsoftheCityofJohnsCreekwerehighandtheteamsgoalwastoexceedthecommunitystandardwhichIamcondenttheydid.The10600square-footamphitheateropenedinJune2014.SincethenCity-sponsoredeventsincludingfourconcertswereheldtherelastyear.Ascheduleofconcertsforthisyearwillbeannouncedsoon.TheamphitheaterisattractivelydesignedwithstackedstoneandSouthernpineandcoversanareathatcanseat400.Theter-racedgrassareacanaccommodate1500.CommunityGardenThroughanagreementbetweentheCityandtheJohnsCreekGar-denAssociationJCGAthereare41bedsintheparkforresidentstoplantandgrowvegetablesherbsandowers.Eachbedis4x8feetx8incheswithsomebedsraisedtoacomfortableheightforseniors.MembershipintheJCGAandanadditionalsmallfeearerequiredtoreserveabed.GardenersprovidetheirownseedsorplantsandtheCityprovideswaterusage.Thegardenbeganasacommunityserviceprojectbythe2010classofLeadershipJohnsCreek.DreamDogParkNewtownParkhassomethingforeveryoneincludinglocaldogs.Theone-acreparkopenedin2011withseparateareasforlargeandsmalldogssprinklersforthedogstoplayinonthosehotdaysofsummertunnelsbridgesandobstaclecourses.Itsagreatplacefordogstorunfreeandsocialize.PhotoscourtesyoftheCityofJohnsCreek 27CountyLineMarch2015learnfromprofessionalsandinteractwithlike-mindedstudentsfromotherschools.Inthefallof2014FBLAmembersfromSFHSjoinedwithnearly4000otherFBLAstudentsfromacrossGeorgiatoattendastateleadershipconferenceinAthenswheretheyreceivedtrainingfrombusinessprofessionalsteachingvariousskillsincludingentrepreneurshippresentationpersonalnanceandleadership.HarinaSomasundaramajuniorwhoservesasthechaptersvicepresidentofcompeti-tionsaidThroughFBLAtrainingIhavelearnedlead-ershipskillsthathelpwithgroupprojectsandschoolassignments.AlsoIhaveaccomplishednewthingslikecompetinginpublicspeaking.Ihavealwaysbeeninter-estedincomputerscienceandbusinessandthroughtheworkIhavedoneinFBLAIhaveaclearideaofmygoalsforthefuture.Memberslearntheinterconnectednessofbusinessandcommunitythroughserviceandfundraisingprojects.StudentshavevolunteeredatThePlaceofForsyththathelpsfamiliesinneed.Theyalsohaveongoingvolun-teerprogramswithSawneeMountainPreserveandalocalGeorgiaSPCAanimalshelter.StudentshavehelpedwithJohnsCreekElementarySchoolsFallFestivalandstaffedtheSFHSfootballconcessionstand.TheFBLAparentorganizationpartnerswithMarchofDimesandtheSFHSchaptercommits50ofitsannualfundrais-ingproceedstothecharity.Fundraisingproceedsalsogotowardscholarshipfoundationsandprovidestudentdiscountsforconferenceregistrations.SFHSstudentshaveshownsuccessatFBLAacademiccompetitions.Afterqualifyingstudentscompeteonaregionallevelfromwhichnalistsproceedtothestatecompetitions.Eachsummerstatenalistscontinuetoanationalcompetition.CarlasaidAhighpercentageofourcompetingmembersplaceasnalists.FBLAgivesstudentsadifferentwaytocompeteoutsideofsports.Theycanndtheirtalentonateamorindividuallevel.Participationincreasesafterstudentsexperiencethetripswheretheymeetothermembersandhavetheop-portunitytocompeteagainstotherschoolsandpracticeleadershipskills.Lastschoolyear17FBLAmembersfromSFHScompetedintheRegionLeadershipConfer-encetoearn10awardsincluding4rstplaceawards.Regionnalistsproceededtoastatecompetitionfromwhichtwostudentswentontoplaceasnalistsatthenationallevel.Thisschoolyearincreasedmembershipandimpetustocompetehavegreatlymultipliedthenumberofcompetitors.InJanuary85FBLAstudentsfromtheSFHSchaptercompetedin130eventsattheregionalcompetition.Thechapterwonatotalof55awardsand51nalistswillproceedtothestatecom-petitioninMarch.678.990.2930WWW.PIECEOFCAKEINC.COMGREENVELVET
