18CountyLineApril2015www.CountyLineMagazine.netuniquenesswhileweavingthemselvesintothefab-ricoftheschool.Diversityisacceptedhereandthispromotestoleranceandexposesthestudentstotherealitythateveryoneisnotthesame.Manypeopleviewdiversityasracebutinfactdi-versityencompassesreligionethnicityandsocio-economicsaswellasraceobservedAssistantPrincipalAmyBooms.Iwenttohighschoolwithotherstudentswhowerejustlikeme.TherewasnodiversitysowhenIwenttocollegewithstudentsofotherracesreligionsandfromothercountriesaroundtheworldIwasshockedanduncomfort-able.ThekidsatNorthviewareatanincrediblead-vantagewhentheyleaveherebecausetheyhavealreadyexperiencedbeingaroundotherswhoarenotjustlikethem.CelebratingandsharingdiversitybeganwiththeschoolsfrstprincipalPeterZervakos.PrincipalZervakosheritagewasGreek.HewasextremelyproudofGreeceandwantedtosharethecultureofhiscountryoforiginandgivestudentsanopportu-nitytosharetheirs.Hecameupwiththeideatocel-ebrateandshareculturesatanInternationalNightevent.Thetraditionhascontinuedandgrownovertheyears.PresentedbyKaleidoscopeandthePTSAthisyearsInternationalNightAroundtheWorldinOneNighttookplaceonFebruary4th.Thereweresamplesoffoodfrom21countriesatTasteofCul-tures.NewtothenightwasMarketPlacewithtablessetupinthepavilionareaoutsideofthecafeteria.ItemsweresoldatMarketPlacefromlocalcompa-niesandschoolclubs.Thetwoperformancesofthetalentshowareahighlightofthenightandgivestu-dentstheopportunitytoperformdancesandsongsfromtheircountries.TheentireweekofFebruary2ndthroughthe6thwasdedicatedasInternationalWeekwithmanyothereventsactivitiesandoppor-tunitiesforthestudentstocelebratediversity.TheglasswindowsaroundthecafeteriawerepaintedwithplacesandmonumentsfromaroundtheworldtheTajMahalinIndiaChristtheRedeemerinBraziltheGreatWallofChinaandtheNewYorkSkyline.Therewasaneatingcontestwithfoodsfromdif-ferentcountriesincludingeggrollssamosasandcroissants.Hennapaintingandhairbraidingsta-tionswereinthecafeteria.Onedaythatweekthestudentsandstaffworeclothingrepresentingtheircountriesoforigin.TherearehundredsofstudentstaffandparentvolunteerswhoarededicatedtopreparingforInternationalWeekandInternationalNight.TheKaleidoscopeclubconductstheauditionsrehearsalsandsellsticketsforthetwoperformanc-esofthetalentshowonInternationalNight.TheyalsoplaneventsthattakeplaceatlunchduringIn-ternationalWeek.Thisweekofcelebratingdiversityistheclubsmajorprojectduringthespringsemes-ter.Whentheschoolopenedin2002thenAssistantPrincipalJamesWilliamsformedamulti-ethnicclubcalledKaleidoscope.Atthattimethestudentpopu-lationwas28Asian7African-American60Caucasianand2Hispanicandotherraces.Mr.WilliamssaidoftheschoolsdiversepopulationatthetimeThestudentsareamulti-coloredwheelthatformsabeautifulbouquet.Themorewesharethemoreweblossomasopposedtobeingsheltered.ThefoundationofKaleidoscopewasbasedonprin-ciplesofculturalpridethepoweroflanguageandidentifyingbias.Todaythereare78membersledbyteachersponsorsMeganHartandLaurieRog-ers.TheclubmembersareinvolvedincommunityserviceprojectsandtheplanningforInternationalWeekandInternationalNight.Theyaretrainedaspeermediatorsandthentrainthefreshmanclassinanti-bullyingdevelopingpracticalexperienceinleadership.EachfalltheyparticipateinPartnershipWalkthatraisesfundsandawarenessforglobalpoverty.TheyalsoparticipateinSolesforSoulsashoedrivethatshipscollectedshoesoverseastocountriesinneed.In2008HyejooJeongssonwasafreshmanatNorthview.ShewantedtobeinvolvedandsoonsawaneedtobridgeagapbetweenAsianparentstheschoolsstaffandthecommunity.Shebecamethebilingualcommunityliaisonaroleshestillperformstoday.TheAsianpopulationattheschoolhasin-creasedconsiderablysinceIstartedastheliaisonsaidHyejoo.Ithasgrownfrom33to48ofthestudentbody.ManyoftheparentsofAsianstudentswanttobeapartoftheirchildrensschoolactivitiesbutareconcernedabouttheirabilitytocommuni-cate.InternationalNightgivesthemtheopportunitytohelpinmanydifferentwaysincludingdecoratingandbringingfoodfromtheircountryforTasteof
