17CountyLineJune2014StudentsfromJuniorCivitanClubsinlocalhighschoolsareservingthecommunitywhilegainingvaluableexperienceandhavingfuntoo.JuniorCivitanfocusesonhelpingstudentswithmentaldisabilities.TheparentorganizationCivitanInternationalisaclubfoundedin1917tosupportpeoplewithinlocalcommunities.Sincethe1950stheorganizationhasshifteditsfo-custohelpingpeoplewithmentaldisabilitiesthroughserviceeducationandresearch.TwolocalchapterstheCummingCivitanClubandtheJohnsCreekCivitanClubrecentlyreachedouttoyoungermembersofthecommunitytoformJuniorCivitanClubsatlocalhighschools.TheJuniorCivitanCreedstatesacommitmenttomaketheworldabetterplaceandstudentsinlocalhighschoolsarefulllingthatmission.GrantHickeypresident-electoftheJohnsCreekCivitanClubistheliaisonforJuniorCivitanClubsatChattahoocheeNorthviewandJohnsCreekHighSchools.TheClubsorganizedduringthefallof2012andwerecharteredthroughCivitanInternationalinDecember2012.GrantsaidEachschoolsetsitsownagendawithateachersponsortosuperviseandofferdirectionandtheJohnsCreekCivitanClubgivessupport.Thegoalistoimprovetheenvironmentofpeoplewithmentaldisabilities.Theyarekindsensitivekidswhovolunteerandarealreadyexceedingmyexpectations.daBetterPlacebyCindyLombardophotographybyMarkNajjarAtlantaStudios CountyLineJune2014www.CountyLineMagazine.net18ChrisBrayatransitionservicesteacheristheteachersponsorfortheJuniorCivitanClubatJohnsCreekHighSchoolJCHS.ChrissaidGreatkidshavegravitatedtotheprogramandwanttogivebacktomembersofthecommunity.Theycontributetimetolocalcitizensprimarilykidswithdisabilities.TheJCHSJuniorCivitanClubbeganwithover20membersandhasmain-tainedabout30membersduringthe2013-2014schoolyear.Co-PresidentsChristianHickeyandBerkleyBryanbothrisingseniorshavebeenwiththeClubsinceitoriginatedandhaveledtheplanningandorganizationofevents.BerkleysaidIwenttotherstmeetingandfellinlovewiththewholemissionoftheClub.ChristianwhohasayoungerbrotherwithautisminitiallyjoinedtheClubforhisinterestinautisticawareness.ThispastschoolyeartheJCHSJuniorCivitanClubhostedaFridaynightsportsdanceinNovemberandtheannualSnowakeDanceinJanuary.ThedancesheldatNorthmin-sterPresbyterianChurcharesponsoredbyGreatProspectsanon-protorganizationwithamissiontoprovidemeaning-fulconnectionsforindividualswithdisabilities.AtthedancesJCHSJuniorCivitanvolunteersdecoratedpreparedandservedmealscleanedupandinteractedwithover50participantswithmentaldisabilitiesranginginagefrom8-40yearsold.BerkleyremembersascaredyounggirlRosiewhocamewithhergrandparentstothe2013SnowakeDance.Thegirlhadneverbeeninacrowdedareaandwastimidandunsureaboutdancing.Thisyearshecameagainandheadedtothedanceoor.Itwasrewardingtoseehowshemadeprogressonherown.HergrandparentsweresothankfulforhowRosieexpressedherselfinpublic.TheCivitansprovidedtheopportunityforhertodothatandIhavegainedgreatrespectforwhattheCivitanClubstandsforinhelpingthecommunityandmakingadifferenceBerkleysaid.Christianhadasimilarexperiencewithamentallydis-abledboyhehadknownsincekindergartenwhopreventedpeoplefrominteractingwithhim.Atadancehecameoverandtalkedtome.Hewashavingagoodtime.Thedancesreallyrep-resentwhatCivitaninvolvementisaboutChristiansaid.ChrisBrayaddsTheJuniorCivitanmembersvaluetheexperiencesthattheyhaveatthesedances.Theyhaveadesiretomakepeopleslivesbetter.ThesekidsvolunteerfortheClubnotbecausetheyarerequiredtoputinhoursbutareputtingintimebecausetheywanttohelp.TheGreatProspectsdancesprovideanacceptingatmosphere.Parentsandcaretakerscandropoffchildrenandyoungadultswithspecialneedsandenjoysomefreetimeknowingtheirlovedonesareinasafeenvironment.TheJCHSJuniorCivitanClubhasservedthecommunityinotherswaystoo.InFebruarytheClubwasrecognizedasthelargestfundraisinghighschoolgroupforthePolarPlungeatLakeLaniertobenetSpecialOlympicsGeorgia.ThepasttwoyearsJuniorCivitanmembersraisedawarenessatJohnsCreekHighSchooltoendthederogatoryuseofthewordretarded.JohnsCreekCivitanmembersandthelocalJuniorCivitanstudentsworkedtogetherattheannualMaypicnicatNewtownPark.Thepicnicisheldforfamilieswhohavememberswithspecialsneeds.In2013atSouthForsythHighSchoolSFHSShwethaMudalegundinowarisingjuniorwant-edtocreateaclubtointeractwithmentallydisabledstudentsonasociallevel.SheapproachedJohnArantateacherformoderateintellectuallydisabledstudentswithanideatostartaclubTwolocalchapterstheCummingCivitanClubandtheJohnsCreekCivitanClubre-centlyreachedouttoyoungermembersofthecommunitytoformJuniorCivitanClubsatlocalhighschools.TheJuniorCivi-tanCreedstatesacommitmenttomaketheworldabetterplaceandstudentsinlocalhighschoolsarefulllingthatmission. 19CountyLineJune2014forherpeerstoworkwiththe20mentallydisabledstudentsattheschool.AroundthistimeDawnReneFlintmemberoftheCummingCivitanClubbecametheJuniorCivitanCommitteeChairmanandwaslookingtohelpstarttherstJuniorCivitanClubinForsythCounty.WhenshecontactedSFHSamatchwasmade.Themembershipdrivebeganinthefallof2013andtheClubwasofciallycharteredinDecember2013.With80membersincluding12mentallydis-abledstudentsitisthelargestJuniorCivitanchapterinGeorgia.ShwethalledtheroleastheClubspresidentandJohnistheteachersponsor.JohnsaidTheCivitanCluboffersnancialandvolunteersupporttotheJuniorCivitanorganizations.FormingtheClubasaJuniorCivitanorganizationgavethemnamerecognitionandotheropportunities.TheSFHSJuniorCivitanClubfullledthegoalofhavingstudentsinteractonasociallevel.Dur-ingatwo-hourstudyhallonceamonthJuniorCivitanmembersvolunteerandhaveincludedotherstudentsandclubssuchastheInstructionalFocusClubandFutureEducatorsAssocia-tion.EightornineJuniorCivitansvolunteereachmonthtohelpatthestudyhall.Theydivideintothreerooms.OneisamovieorWiiroomanotherhasacookingactivityandthethirdisforcrafts.Thedisabledstudentsareabletostrengthensocialaswellasfunctionalskillssuchasspreadingpeanutbutteroncrackersorcountingoutingredients.ShwethasaidIsawdisabledstudentswalkinginthehallsandwantedtoseemoreinteraction.Wewerealwaysseparate.TheClubisanopportunity.IloveandappreciatedisabledstudentsmorenowthatIcanrelatetothemandfoundthatIcanjustbemyselfandactnormallyaroundthem.SFHSJuniorCivitanssponsoredtherstSadieHawkinsdanceattheirschoolinFebruary.ItwastherstfundraiserandtheadultCummingCivitanmembershelpedtodecoratefortheevent.Therewereabout140inattendance.Themajorityoftheschoolsspecialneedskidswerethere.JohnsaidThosestudentscouldfeelcomfortablebecausetheJuniorCivitanClubprovidedadanceenvironmentfordisabledstudentstoattend.Itwasspecialtosee100teenagersand10adultsfromtheCivitanClubworkingtogethertodecoratefortheSadieHawkinsdance.ForanotherfundraisingprojectSFHSJuniorCivitanshostedacarwashinApril.Studentshavealsoworkedtogetherinotherways.TheHumaneSocietycomestoSFHSonceaweekwithdogstohelpinthespecialneedsclassroom.ToshowsupportJuniorCivitanmemberscollectoldtow-elsfortheHumaneSocietyseveraltimesthroughouttheschoolyear.Joeyadisabledstudentgetsleadershipskillsfromheadingthesedrives.TheCivitanorganizationisalargesponsorofSpecialOlympicsandSFHSJuniorCivitanmembersjoinwithotherstudentstosupporttheorganization.FourtimesayearstudentscansignuptovolunteerandattendtheSpecialOlym-pics.Thispastyear86studentsfromSFHSattended.JohnsaidIwantstudentstocontinuetondawaytoserveintoadulthoodandhelppeoplewithdisabilities.ShwethaisonthatpathandhasreachedoutsideoftheClubtondpersonalenrichmentfromherplatformwithJuniorCivitan.Shedidaresearchprojectaboutdisabilitiesforaclassatschoolandhelpedbringawarenesstospecialneedschildren.ThroughherworkwithJuniorCivitanshewillhaveanopportunitythissummertointernattheCivitanInterna-tionalResearchCenterattheUniversityofAlabamainBirmingham.TheCenterbenetsmen-tallydisabledpeoplethroughserviceeducationandresearch.CummingCivitanDawnRenesaidSouthForsythHighSchoolistheagshipschoolfortheCountyandIhopetoexpandJuniorCivitanClubstohighschoolsinotherpartsoftheCounty.Ithinkitisagoodlessonforthekidstogivebacktotheirpeersschoolandthecommunity.GrantHickeywithJohnsCreekCivitanssaidItisanincredibleexperienceandrewardingbothsociallyforkidsthatvolunteerandthespecialneedsparticipants.Withthegoalofservingmen-tallydisabledstudentsandthecommunitylocalJuniorCivitanClubshavemadegreatstridesinmakingtheworldabetterplace.
