CountyLineJuly2014www.CountyLineMagazine.net18Mikesopportunitiestohelpothersgrewasheexpandedhisinvolvementwithorganizationsandcommitteesandascommunityleadersbegantofocusonmak-ingJohnsCreekitsowncity.WhilenegotiatingasolutionforhissubdivisionsroadusageproblemMikemetBobFultoncommissionerforDistrict3whosug-gestedhejointheJohnsCreekCommunityAssociationJCCA.MikeservedontheJCCAsboardofdirectorsastreasurerandasco-chairofthezoningcommittee.In2005followingtheincorporationofSandySpringstobecomeacityMikechairedtheNortheastFultonStudyCommitteeNEFSCOandworkedcloselywithSpeakerProTemMarkBurkhaltertodetermineifitwasviablefortheareatobecomeacity.UltimatelyBurkhalterintroducedlegislationtoallowthecitizenstovoteoncityhood.WiththeinitialstudycompleteandlegislationintroducedNEFSCOdissolvedandMikewasimmediatelyelectedtochairtheCommitteeforJohnsCreek.TheCommitteesmissionwasinitiallytoworktogetthelegislationapprovedandlatertoeducatethecitizensonthereferendumadvocatingforayesvotefortheCityofJohnsCreek.VotersweresplitintotwoareasAandB.BothareashadlandthatcouldpotentiallybeannexedbyeitherAlpharettaorRoswell.MikeparticipatedindebatesoverlandwithRoswellsMayorJereWoodbecomingthefaceforJohnsCreekcityhood.OnJuly182006votersfrombothareaAandBpassedthereferen-dumandonDecember12006JohnsCreekwouldofciallybecomeacity.HavingspearheadedtheghtforcityhoodMikewasencouragedtorunforMay-orbythosewhohadstoodwithhimduringtheght.Bythistimehewasbothcomfortablewithandcondentinhisroleasaleader.Hedecidedtotakeawell-earnedvacationatthebeachandleftforFloridaafewdaysafterthereferendumpassed.WhilethereMikereceivedaphonecallfromhisbrotherBrianwhotoldhimthedeadlinetolethepaperworktorunforMayorhadbeenannouncedandthatitwasinafewdays.MikeaskedBriantoleforhiminabsentia.HeranunopposedsoMikewastobecometherstMayoroftheCityofJohnsCreek.HehadachievedthedreamandwouldsoonbeleadingtheteamofCityCouncilmemberstocreateacityfromscratch.AshefocusedonbuildinganewcityMikealsoreachedouttobuildrelation-shipswithneighboringcitiesandrepresentJohnsCreekonanationallevel.InanefforttofurthercooperationbetweenlocalMayorshejoinedtheMayorsofAlpharettaRoswellMiltonMountainParkandSandySpringstoformtheNorthFultonMunicipalAssociationandwastheAssociationsrstchairman.HebecametherevenueandnancechairontheboardofdirectorsoftheGeorgiaMunicipalAssociationGMAastatewideleagueofcitiesandsoonbecametherstNorthFultonMayortoserveasthatorganizationsvicepresident.HebecameaboardmemberoftheMetroAtlantaMayorsAssociationMAMAandtherstMayortoserveaschairformultipleterms.Hewasappointedacom-mitteevice-chairontheUSCouncilofMayorsinJanuary2008andonbehalfoftheCityofJohnsCreekproudlyreceivedthatorganizationsPublicPrivatePartnershipAward.Onamorelocallevelin2007MikejoinedSpeakerMarkBurkhalterandRepre-sentativeLynneRileytoformtheJohnsCreekFoundationwhichisdedicatedtoIfndgreatjoyinhelpingpeoplesolvetheirproblemsbymakingconnectionsputtingtherightpeopletogetherandfxingwhatisbroken.ButmygreatestjoyhascomewiththerealizationthatIalwaysgetbackmuchmorethanIcanpossiblygivetoothers.
