CountyLineOctober2013www.CountyLineMagazine.net20ditiontoHoustonthereareCanCareorganizationsinJohnsCreekandColoradoSpringsColorado.CanCarealsoprovidesemotionalsupportforfamilymembersofcancerpatientsbyvolunteerswhohavehadafamilymemberwithcancer.Theyalsohavevolunteerswhovisitcancerpatientsinthehospitalandattreatmentcenters.In2004KayandherfamilymovedtoJohnsCreekandbecamemembersofJohnsCreekPresbyterianChurchJCPC.KaymetRev.NealKuhlhorstpastorforcongregationalcareatJCPCandthespouseofacoloncancersurvivor.In2011aftermanyconversationsaboutCanCareKayandNealbegantotalkaboutbringingCanCaretoJohnsCreek.Theyinvestigatedwhatserviceswereavailabletocancerpatientsinthecommunity.Theirdesirewastoaugmentexistingservicesnottoduplicatethemandwhattheyfoundwasanop-portunityforCanCaretointegrateintowhatothersinthecommu-nityweredoing.Theyspokewithcommunityorganizationsandlo-calhousesofworshipaboutget-tinginvolvedandfoundthemtobesupportive.Inthefallof2012afriendlyvisitturnedintoanin-credibleopportunityforthede-velopmentofCanCareinJohnsCreek.WhenTimParkbeganworkingastheChaplainatEmoryJohnsCreekHospitalEJCHNealwenttowelcomehimtothecommunity.DuringtheirconversationNealtoldTimaboutwhatCanCarewasdoinginJohnsCreek.TimspokewithEmoryJohnsCreekHospitalsChiefExecutiveOfcerCraigMc-CoyandChiefNursingOfcerMarilynMargolisaboutCanCarethatsamedayandthedoorsofEJCHwereopenedtovisitsfromvolunteerswithcancerpatientsatthehospital.InadditiontovolunteervisitsNealandKaybecameinvitedguestsoftheOncologyCommitteeatthehospital.AllCanCarevolunteersgothrougha13-hourtrainingprogramthatisconductedonaFridayeveningalldaySaturdayandSundayafternoon.Volunteersmusteitherbeasurvivorwhohasbeennishedwiththeirtreatmentforatleastsixmonthsorhavebeenthecaregiverorfamilymemberofacancersurvivor.InApril2012thersttrainingsessionwasconductedinJohnsCreekfor24volunteers.Theylearnedthepowerofsharingtheirstorystartingwiththeirdiagnosis.Theyidentiedtheemo-tionstheyexperiencedfromtheearlyphaseoftheirjourneyuptothepresent.Therewerespeakersandpaneldiscussionsaboutcancerandthemanytreatmentoptions.TheskillsespeciallylisteningskillsthatareneededbyvolunteerswerediscussedaswellastheresourcesthatareavailablethroughCanCareandothersupportagencies.Volunteerswerealsotrainedtohelppatientscopewiththeuncertaintiesandemotionsthehopesdreamsandfearsofthosewithcancer.Aftercompletingthetrainingweekendvolunteerswerereadytobeasourceofpositiveencouragementandvaluableinformationforcancerpatientsandtheircaregivers.InJune2013KayandNealattendeda2-daysessioninHoustontobecomecertiedtrainers.InlateAugustofthisyearthesecondtrainingweek-endwasheldinJohnsCreekfor16newvolunteers.ItwastherstsessionconductedbyKayandNealasthetrainers.OnTuesdayandThursdaymorningsCanCarevolunteersvisitpatientsatEmoryJohnsCreekHospital.Thepurposeoftheirvisitsistoprovidepositiveencouragementandcomfort.Theyoftenbringthegiftofaprayershawltowarmthepatientsbothphysicallyandintheirheart.GivingpatientsprayerTherehasbeenanincredibleintegra-tionofthefaithmedicalandbusinesscommunitiesinJohnsCreekandsur-roundingareasandtheresultofthiscol-laborationhasenabledustoallworkto-gethertoprovideemotionalsupportforlocalcancerpatientsandtheirfamiliesobservedNeal.Iliketorefertoitasorganizedsynergisticenergy. 21CountyLineOctober2013shawlsbeganwhenMarilynBurdickamemberofJohnsCreekUnitedMethodistChurchcontactedNealandKaytoaskifprayershawlswhichareknittedbymembersofthechurchsprayershawlministrycouldbedonated.Otherlocalchurchprayershawlministriesarenowalsodonatingshawls.TheyaregiventopatientsduringvisitsatEJCHbyvolunteerssuchasBillNeils.BillwasdiagnosedwithprostatecancerPCin2007.WhenIheardthatIhadprostatecancerIfeltlikeadeerinheadlightssaidBill.IhadtomakeadecisiononwhattreatmentIwantedandthereweresomanydifferentoptions.Ididntknowwhattodoorwheretogo.AfriendofBillswhohadrecentlybeendiagnosedwithandtreatedforprostatecancerhelpedBilltoconsiderhisoptionsandgavehimemotionalsupport.UnderstandingthevalueofhavingsupportfromasurvivorandwantingtodothesameforothersBillbecameaCanCarevolunteerandwentthroughthetrainingin2012.Hewasmatchedwithapatientwithstage4PCwholivedinJohnsCreek.Theymetforcoffeeandstillhaveanongoingfriendship.OnthemorningsthatBillvisitspatientsatEJCHhemeetswiththechargenurseoneitherthe3rdor4thoorandisgiventhenamesandroomnumbersofcancerpa-tients.IintroducemyselftothepatientandexplainwhatCanCareisthatIamasurvivortalkwiththemasmuchastheywanttotalkabouttheirillnessgivethempositiveencouragementandpraywiththemexplainedBill.SometimesapatientwillbetheonetoprayandIfeelblessedbytheirprayers.WhileBillisgivingsupporttopatientshealsobenetsbythesevisits.AfterRobinRalphcompletedhertreatmentforbreastcancershewantedtobetheretohelpwalksomeoneelsethroughthedaysandweeksimmediatelyfollowingtheirdiagnosis.Thisissuchadif-culttimesaidRobin.HavingbeenthereIfeltthatIcouldhelpsomeonegoingthroughthoseoverwhelminglydifcultdaysandweeksfollowingdiagnosisbecauseIknowhowtheyarefeelingcouldsharemyexperiencewiththemanswertheirquestionsandletthemknowthatthereissome-onewhoknowswhattheyaregoingthrough.RobinattendedCanCaresrstvolunteertraininginJohnsCreek.PamLordwasdiagnosedwithbreastcancerattheendofJanuary2013.SheknewKayRoyalfromJCPCandtalkedwithheraboutherdiagnosis.KayencouragedPamtocallCanCaretobematchedwithabreastcancersurvivorwhichshedid.InFebruaryPamwasmatchedwithRobinandreceivedacallfromher.PamsaidIwassooverwhelmedanditwassoempoweringformetobeabletotalktoRobinbecauseIknewshereallyunderstoodhowIwasfeeling.Ihadalotofsupportfromfamilyandfriendsbutitsdifferenttobeabletotalkwithsomeonewhohasbeenthroughtheexperience.ThereissomuchinformationbeingthrownatyouandbeingabletotalkthroughitwithRobinwassuchablessing.NealKuhlhorstswifeDebbieisacoloncancersurvivorandheunderstandsthedifferentneedsofthosewhoarethefamilymemberofacancerpatient.YouhaveyourownfearsandanxietybuthavetoshieldthosefeelingstostaypositiveandupbeatwhenyourlovedoneisdealingwithcancersaidNeal.Itisincrediblyrewardingformetobeabletosharethatexperiencewithotherswhoaregoingthroughit.TherehasbeenanincredibleintegrationofthefaithmedicalandbusinesscommunitiesinJohnsCreekandsurroundingareasandtheresultofthiscollaborationhasenabledustoallworktogethertoprovideemotionalsupportforlocalcancerpatientsandtheirfamiliesobservedNeal.Iliketorefertoitasorganizedsynergisticenergy.JustoneexampleofpeopleworkingtogethertookplacelastMaywhenafundraisingconcertandsilentauctionwasheldattheballeldofJCPC.Over100localvolunteersfromthecommunityworkedonthiseventwhichraisedenoughmoneytohaveKayandNealgotoHoustontobecomecertiedtrainersandforthetrainingofmorelocalvolunteersthispastAugust.Whetheracancerpatientcancersurvivorfamilymemberorcaregiverpeopledealingwiththeirdiagnosisandcancertreatmentneedsupport.CanCarevolunteersaretheretoprovidethissupport.Formoreinformationtobecomeavolunteerorforsupporteithervisitthewebsiteatwww.cancare.orgorsendanemailtoCanCarejcpusa.org.
