CountyLineNovember2014www.CountyLineMagazine.net18programs.TheUnitedWayhascommittedmorethan70000annuallytoassistwithtuitionforrecov-erycreditsforremediationclassestransportationforthebeforeandafterschoolprogramsfeesforHighSchoolGraduationTestreviewsessionsandotherservicestohelpthosestudentswhootherwisewouldnotbeabletoaffordtutoring.Wepartnerwithteacherscounselorsschoolsocialworkersandgraduationcoachesonacase-by-casebasistohelppreventstudentsfromdroppingoutofschoolandtograduateontimeRuthshares.TheorganizationalsosupportstheREADandLiteracyForsythprogramspreschoolscholarshipstextbookandfeescholarshipsatLanierTechnicalCollegeandMentorMeNorthGeorgia.TheannualStufftheBuseventteamstheUWFCwithothercommunitypartnerstocollectdonat-edschoolsupplieseverysummerensuringthatallstudentsheadingofftoschoolhavethesuppliestheyneed.TheUWFCprovidesnancialsupporttoalargenumberofprogramswhosefocusisphysicalandmentalhealthincludingGeor-giaHighlandsMedicalServiceswhichpro-videsmedicalservicestoadultsandchildrenregardlessofincometheAmericanRedCrossandtheCoast2CoastRXPrescriptionCardafreeprescriptiondiscountcard.AttheannualGiveKidsaSmileDayinFebruarylocaldentistsprovidestudentswhoareidentiedthroughdentalscreeningattheirschoolswithfreedentalservicesincludingcleaningsx-rayssealantsuoridetreatmentsandwhenneededmoreextensiveprocedures.TohelpmeetresidentsbasicneedstheUWFCsupportstheworkofanumberofagenciesandorganiza-tionsthatarededicatedtoimprovingthedailylivesofcommunitymembers.AgeWellForsyththeSeniorExpoHabitatforHumanityabusprogramtotransportadultswithspecialneedstoandfromtheirwork-placeandyouthresidentialprogramsatJessesHouseandBaldRidgeBoysLodgearejustafew.SinceitsfoundingtheUnitedWayofForsythCountyhasbeenakeysupporterofThePlaceofForsythCountywhichoffersemergencyassistancefoodprogramsandathriftstore.EveryMaytheUWFCpartnerswiththeNationalAssociationofLetterCarrierstoStampOuttheHungerinForsythasmailcarrierscollectfooditemsontheirroutes.Sincetheinitiativebeganin2009morethan63tonsofnon-perishablefooditemshavebeendistributedtolocalfoodpantriesandprograms.Tohelpmeettheongoingaround-the-clockneedforessentialservicesrangingfromndingsubstanceabuseassistancetohelpwithanagingparenttheUnitedWayofForsythCountyhascontractedwiththe2-1-1callcenterinAtlantatoprovideinformationandreferralservices.Allcallstothecenterarecon-dentialandoperatorsprovideassistanceinbothEnglishandSpanish24hoursadaysevendaysaweek.Anadditionalbenettothe2-1-1serviceisthatittracksthetypesofservicesthatcallersareseekingsuchasutilityfoodandhousingassistanceandhelpsguidetheUnitedWayseffortsastheydistributefundsandresourcesinthecommunity.PerhapsmostencouragingisthatthenumberonereasonpeopleinForsythCountycall2-1-1istoaskwheretheycandonateclothingandhouseholditems.OneoftheUWFCsmostsuccessfulcommunityinvolvementprogramsistheannualDayofCaring.The13thannualDayofCaringwasheldonSeptember5thandbroughttogethercloseto700volunteersincludingteamsfromForsythCountySchoolsATTPublixTargetUPSNorthsideHospital-Forsythlo-calbanksandKiwanisCivitanandRotaryClubs.AsadmissiontotheeventvolunteerswereaskedtodonatejuiceboxesfruitcupsbreakfastbarsraisinsfruitsnacksandPop-Tartswhicharesharedwithschoolsandpartnerorganizationsthroughoutthecounty.Afterabrieftrainingsession450oftheDayofCaringvolunteersstaffedanassemblylinetopackagevitamin-richnon-perishablemealsofriceandbeansandmacaroniandcheese.ThepackingprocessForsythCountygarnerssomanyaccolades.Wehavehighincomegoodschoolsthestateshighesthighschoolgraduationrateandwewerenamedthehealthiestcountyinthestate.Butthereisstillneedhereandsometimesitshardtorecognize.RuthGoodeExecutiveDirector 19CountyLineNovember2014wasorganizedandfacilitatedbyTheOutreachProjectanIowa-basednon-protorganization.Afteramorningofwork60000mealswerereadyfordeliverytolocalfoodpantries.TwolocalRotaryClubsalsoarrangedtosendpackagedmealstoTanzania.OtherDayofCaringparticipantsspenttheirmorningworkingthroughoutthecountycompletingtasksforCASAJessesHouseLiteracyForsythMentorMeNoLongerBoundThePlaceAbbaHouseandmore.TheDayofCaringreallytookofflastyearandthisyearseventwasourlargestyetRuthsayswithexcitement.Wehadsomanyteamssignupthatwehadtocloseregistration.Nowwerelookingatexpandingtheprogramnextyearperhapsoperatingamorningandanafternoonshifttoallowformorevolunteerstoparticipate.ThegoverningbodyofUnitedWayofForsythCountyisacarefullyselectedBoardofDirectors.Membersrepresentallgeographicareasofthecountyandbringtotheorganizationavarietyofbackgroundsandprofessionalexperience.CurrentlytheBoardisintheprocessofdeterminingtheorganizationsdirectionforthenextfewyearsandtoallocateresourcesinthecounty.RuthexplainsWearecontinuallyplan-ninghowtobestusemoneyandtime.Thisisalargepartofourworkthoughitsnotalwaysvisible.TheorganizationslargeactiveCommunityInvestmentCommitteeensuresthatfundsreachtheneces-saryinitiativesandpartnerorganizationsandprograms.Therearejustfourfull-timestaffmembersandRuthsaysOursmallstaffsizeunderscorestheimportanceofagreatgroupofvolunteerswithoutwhomwecouldntbeasefcientandeffectivewithourdonorsmoney.Wevalueourvolunteerstimeandresources.Theyareagreatassettous.FundingfortheUnitedWayofForsythCountyisentirelydonor-drivenandtheirfundraisingcampaignrunsvirtuallyyear-round.ManylargecompaniescontributeatthecorporatelevelUPSandPublixaretheUnitedWayofForsythCountyslargestdonorsaswellasencouragingtheiremployeestodonateoftenmatchingemployeecontributions.Thisyearscampaignisexpectedtoraisemorethan1.8millionwhichwilldirectlysupportnearly60non-protorganizationsandprogramsinadditiontotheUnitedWaysowninitiatives.PlannedgivingwheredonorsincludetheUnitedWayintheirwillsalsohelpstofundtheorganizationsefforts.SuchadonationmadeitpossiblefortheUnitedWayofForsythCountytopurchaseitsownbuildinginCumming.ThebuildingincludesaCommunityRoomwhichtheUnitedWaymakesavailableforfreetrainingprogramsfornon-protgroupstobuildcapacitywithintheirorganiza-tions.Itsalsothehomeforcommunityconversationsonissuesfacinglocalresidents.Topicsmayincludefoodinsecurityhomelessnessoreducationchallengesandparticipantsincluderepre-sentativesfromagenciesandorganizationsinvolvedinmeetingthoseneeds.ThisisawayforustolistentoourcommunityRuthexplains.Werenotjustafundraisingorga-nization.Welistentoourcommunitysothatwecanworkonaddressingthehealthandhumanservicesneedshere.Sinceitsfoundingin1989theUnitedWayofForsythCountysstaffandBoardofDi-rectorshavewitnessedincrediblegrowthinthecountythoughmanyofthebasicneedsfoodhealthcareeducationareunchangedparticularlyinpocketsofpov-ertythroughoutthecounty.InthatsametimesaysRuthwehaveseentheestablishmentofsomanyagenciestoprovideservicestoourcitizens.Therearesignicantlymoreresourcesavailabletoourresidentstodaythanwehad20yearsagoandweneedtoprovidethesupporttokeepthemupandrunning.Wearefortunatetohavesomanypeopleworkingtogethertoaddressourcommunitysneedsandtherearealwaysopportunitiestohelp.Weshouldallbeveryproudofwhatwehavehere.Oursmallstaffsizeunderscorestheimpor-tanceofagreatgroupofvolunteerswith-outwhomwecouldntbeasefcientandeffectivewithourdonorsmoney.Wevalueourvolunteerstimeandresources.Theyareagreatassettous.RuthGoodeExecutiveDirector CountyLineNovember2014www.CountyLineMagazine.net20BobGrayhasalwaysbeengoaldriven.Hesetagoaltohavealovinghappyfamilylife.HemarriedhishighschoolsweetheartSu-sanneandtheyhavefourchildren.Hesetagoaltoobtainthebesteducationhecould.HegraduatedfromPurdueUniversitywithaBSinEngineeringandaMBAfromtheUniversityofChicago.Whilefocus-ingonacareerinmanagementconsultingandtech-nologyservicesBobsetagoaltoadvancequicklyandbecameapartnerintwelveyears.Afterlearn-inghissonhaddyslexiaheledtheSwiftSchooltobecomethelargestschoolintheSoutheastservingchildrenwithdyslexia.AresidentofJohnsCreeksince1994BobthensetagoaltohelphiscommunitybecomeathrivingandleadingcityinGeorgia.In2005-2006hesupportedtheGovernorsCommissionforJohnsCreek.ThisyearheranforCityCouncilandasofJuly28be-ganservinginPost4.SettingandachievinggoalshasenabledBobtoenjoyawonderfulfamilyhaveasuccessful30yearcareerinconsultingtechnologyandoutsourcingandtobeavaluablecontributingcitizenofhiscommunity.AsBobwasgrowingupinBuffaloabluecollarau-tomotiveandsteeltownwithalaggingeconomywithfewcareeropportunitieshewasthankfulthatheexcelledatmathandscience.Thisledhimtoanobviouscareerchoice.Ifyouweregoodatmathandscienceyouwentintoengineering.Thiswasthepathtoawhitecollarprofessionandgreateropportunity.AftergraduatingfromPurduewithadegreeinIndustrialEngineeringBobbeganacon-sultingcareerandworkedwithsomeofthelargestcorporationsintheworld.Hisengagementsinvolvedextensivedomesticandinternationaltravel.EarlyinhiscareerBobspentseveralyearsconsultingwithBellSouthinBirminghamandAtlanta.SowhenheandSusannedecidedtorelocatefromChicagotheymadetheirtoptenlistandratedpotentialcitiesbyclimatehousingvaluesandairport.Atlantarankednumberone.BobSusanneandtheirone-year-olddaughterMadelinemovedtoJohnsCreekin1994.TheirfamilygrewwiththebirthoftwinsMarshallandSavannahanddaughterAllie.In2005RobertHornafriendandneighborwasappointedasChairmanoftheGovernorsCommis-sionforJohnsCreek.AwareofBobsexperienceinmanagementconsultingRobertapproachedBobandaskedforhishelpinfacilitatingthediscussionamongthelargerworkinggroupwithmemberswhobroughttheirownexperienceinvariousinter-DrivenbyGoals 21CountyLineNovember2014estsanddisciplineswithzoninganddevelopmentasanotableexample.In2006whenJohnsCreekbecameacityBobturnedhisattentiontotheSwiftSchool.TheirsonMarshallattendedtheSwiftSchoolforseveralyearsandBobrecognizedtheschoolsneedtogrow.Icouldseethattherewasmagichappen-ingforthesechildrenintheclassroombutIalsosawtheneedfortheschooltoclarifyitsmissionandvisionandtodevelopastrategyforgrowthsaidBob.HequicklybecameChairmanoftheBoardofTrusteesapositionheheldfrom2005to2011andfocusedonchartinganewcoursefortheschool.DuringBobsleadershiptheschoolmovedtoanew5-acrecampushiredaheadmasterandprofession-alstaffandsettheschoolonapathtogrowfrom60studentsto275studentstoday.Bobcontinuestoserveasatrustee.BobsdecisiontorunforCityCouncilwasmoti-vatedbyhisinteresttohelpJohnsCreekbecomeacommunitythatpeoplewouldcallhomeforgen-erations.Hebelievesfamilyisaninextricablepartofcommunityandthatourcommunityneedstobeequallyappealingtomillennialsfamiliesandse-niors.Withthreegoalsinmindimprovingqualityoflifeestablishingarobustlocaleconomyandde-velopingauniquecityidentityBoboutlinedaplanforachievingthesegoals.DuringhiscampaignitbecameveryclearthattheresidentsofJohnsCreekfeltstronglyaboutthreecriticalissuestrafcde-velopmentandparks.IrecognizedthatweneededtoaddresstheseissuesinorderforJohnsCreektocontinuetobeadesirableplacetoliveworkandplaysaidBob.Iamveryhappytobeabletocon-tributeasamemberoftheCityCouncil.LookingaheadBobseestheneedfortheCitytomakeimportantchoicesaboutitsfuture.ThesechoiceswillthendeterminethedirectionoftheCityandtheinvestmentstheMayorandCouncilapprove.BobcurrentlyservesontheBoardofDirectorsofAmmacorealocalnetworkingsolutionsstartupandasamentorwithGeorgiaTechsATDC.HeandSusanneareinvolvedatNorthPointCommunityChurch.Bobhassetandachievedgoalsthrough-outhislifeandasamemberoftheCityCouncilJohnsCreekwillbenetfromhisdrivetoachievehisgoals.
