CountyLineDecember2014www.CountyLineMagazine.net18WithitsfarnortheasternlocationLoringAirForceBasewasstrategicallyimportantdur-ingtheColdWarastheclosestbasetotheSovietUnioninthecontinentalUnitedStates.WhilestationedthereJeffworkedintheMoraleWelfareandRecreationProgrampartofthemilitaryscommitmenttoitsmembersmaintainingahealthyworklifebalance.Hewasresponsibleforcreatingrecreationalactivitiesforthebaseincludingorganizingsoftballandbasketballleaguesoverseeingartsandhobbyactivitiesandimplementingtnessprograms.Atthesametimehewasapproachedbyalocalhighschooltocoachitsbas-ketballteam.Thoughhehadnotpreviouslycoachedhetookthejobandsoondiscoveredhowmuchheenjoyedworkingwithyoungpeople.JeffreturnedtocollegewhilestillintheAirForcetakingclassesatthebaseandatalocaluniversity.WhenafterfouryearshelefttheAirForceJefffocusedhiseffortsonearninghisBachelorsdegreeandteachingcredentials.HegraduatedfromtheUniversityofMainein1990andtookajobteachingseventhgradelanguageartsandcontinuedtocoachhighschoolbasketball.IfyouhadaskedmethenwhatIdbeingdoingtodayIwouldhavesaidTeachingmiddleschoolstudentsandcoachinginhighschool.Buttherewasadif-ferentpathforJeffandoneofhismostinuentialmentorshelpedhimtotaketherststepsonit.Dr.GehrigJohnsonSuperintendentofNorthernMaineslargestschooldistrictsawlead-ershippotentialinJeffandhiredhimtobeateacherandathleticdirectoratthelargestschoolinMaineSchoolAdministrativeDistrict1.JeffexplainsHetookmeunderhiswinghepromotedmehementoredmeandhesbeenmyfriendeversince.FromthatroleJefftookhisrstsuperintendentjobattheageof36.Itwasasmallschoolsystemwithjust330studentsinkindergartenthroughhighschool.OurcentralofcewasjustthreepeopleJeffrecalls.Itwassuchagoodexperience.Beingsuperintendentinasystemthatsizeyoulearnabouteverythingcurriculumfacilityplanningandmainte-nancetransportation.ImfortunatetohavehadthatexperienceasInowhaveabetterunderstandingofhowallofthedepartmentsinalargerschoolsystemoperate.IcantxaschoolbusbutIdohaveanunderstandingofhowoftentheyneedtobereplaced.JeffwentontoearnhisMastersdegreefromtheUniversityofMaineandaDoctoratede-greefromNovaSoutheasternUniversitywhichwasthelargestdistancelearningprogramineducationatthetime.OnlinelearningwasnotwhatitistodayandJeffexplainsthathestudiedinacohortsystemtraveling400mileseachwaytoandfromBostononweekendstomeetwithfellowstudentsandattendingclassesattheschoolsMiamicampusinthesummer.BeyondearningmydegreetherewasthebenetofbeingabletonetworkwitheducatorsfromalloverthecountryandIlearnedsomuchabouthowdifferenttypesofschoolsystemswork.ItreallybroadenedmyperspectiveJeffshares.Afterspending27yearsinMaineJeffreturnedtohissouthernrootsandbecamesuperin-tendentofFayetteCountyPublicSchoolsin2011.PartofmeknewIwouldendupbackhereatsomepointhesays.HewaslaternamedsuperintendentofRomeCitySchoolsin2013.AgainifyouaskedmethenwhatIwouldbedoingfortherestofmycareerIwouldhavetoldyouIdbeinRome.Itsagreatcitywithasupportivecommunityandschoolboard.MywifeandIhadahouseplandrawnandwereabouttopurchaselandsaidJeff.Butagainhisopennesstonewopportunitiesledhimdownadifferentpath.HavingvisitedForsythCountySchoolsaspartofaBYOTBringYourOwnTechnologyTourJeffsayshewasblownawaybytheschoolshere.ThereislotsofdatatosupportthatthisisthepremiereschoolsysteminthestateandwhenIsawthatthesuperintendent CountyLineDecember2014www.CountyLineMagazine.net28MostcurrentresidentsofNorthGeorgiaknowthattheCherokeenationonceinhabitedthearea.ButbeforetheCherokeenationexperiencedtheTrailofTearsandthelandlotteriestherewereotherinhabitants.ThersthumansknowntohavelivedhereweredescendantsofthePaleo-IndianscalledArchaicIndians.Thisgroupofnomadichuntersandgathererslivedoffbeardeerturkeyduckrabbitsquirrelraccoonfoxandopossum.Theirdietwassupplementedbytheberriesseedsnutsleavesandrootsthewomencollected.Thisgroupexistedfrom8000B.C.to1000B.C.andwasgraduallyreplacedwiththeWoodlandIndiansoverapproximately1000years.InsteadofrelyingonndingrandomberriesornutstheWoodlandIndiansbecamefarmersbycreatingclearingsintheforestforplantingseedssavedfromtheirpreviousharvest.Oftentheseclearingswereinoodplainsorlow-lyingareasalongstreamsmakingirrigationeasier.Theygrewsquashcornbeanspumpkinsandsunowersforoil.Theylivedinwoodenstructuresandmadepotterywithintricatepatternswiththeuseofcarvedpaddles.TheWoodlandIndiansexistedfrom1000B.C.to800A.D.ThenextdenedperiodofinhabitantsfortheareaweretheMississippianIndianswhoexistedfrom800A.D.to1540A.D.ThetermMississippianisusedbecausetherstsignsofthisnewculturewerefoundinvillagesalongtheMississippiRiver.ThisgroupbuiltvillagesalongthemajorriversliketheirWoodlandpredecessorsbuttheydifferedbecausetheygroupedintotribeswithchiefdoms.Attheheadoftherulingfamilywasachiefwithpowerinheritedthroughhismotherbeingamatriarchalsociety.TheMississippiansleftmorepotteryandartifactsthanalltheotherIndiansbeforethemcombined.AnotheradvancementoftheMississippianswastheirabilitytomakecanoesoutoftrunksoflargetreesbyburningandchippingthemoutandtheirlastinglegacyforustoobservetodayarethemoundstheyconstructedaroundthesoutheasternUnitedStates.From1540A.D.thereisevidencethatsomeCreekIndiansorMuscogeeastheyreferredtothemselveslivedinthearea.TheycamefromthewestpushedbywarringtribesfromtheothersideoftheMississippiRiver.WhileMuscogeemigratedfromthewesttheCherokeeweremigratingfromNorthCarolinaandTennesseeintothemountainsofNorthGeorgia.ThetwotribesclashedfourmileseastofpresentdayBallGroundintheBattleofTaliwain1755.TheCherokeedrovetheMuscogeeacrosstheChattahoocheeRiverandtheriverbecametheboundarybetweenthetwonations.Proofofthesepreviousinhabitantscomesfromnumerousarchaeologicalsitesinthearea.TherearesiteslocatedontheChattahoocheeRiverjustsouthofGeorgiaHighway20.OtherswerediscoverednorthofthehighwayalongtheriverandotherswhichwerenorthofBufordDamarenowbyTammyHardenGallowayBeforetheCherokee 29CountyLineDecember2014underthewatersofLakeLanier.TheSmithsonianInstitutionidentied60prehistoricsitesduringtheconstructionofthedaminthenowoodedareawhichincludedearthenmoundsandSummerouranarcheologicaldigofanIndianhomesitedatingback8000years.OneofthelargestarchaeologicalsitesintheareawastheStricklandFerrysitelocatedwhereGeorgiaHighway20crossestheChattahoocheeRiver.CharlotteCorderyVickeryanIndianwomanlivedattheferryinthe1830sandownedhalfinterestinOrrsFerrywhichwastheforerunnerofStricklandsFerry.ThereisavillagesiteonthewestbankoftheriverwherelargeamountsofpotteryshardshavebeenrecovereddatingfromprehistoricpeoplesthroughWoodlandculturesandamatureMississippiansocietytotheCherokee.Eachofthesecultureshadthreetofourdifferentpotterypatternsfordecorationmarkingtheevolutionofthoseculturesforarcheologists.AnothernotablearchaeologicalsiteintheareaistheThomasSitewhichislocatedneartheChattahoocheeRiverhalfamilewestoftheSuwaneeBridgeandaquartermilenorthoftheroadleadingtoShakerag.Atthislocationtherewasamoundofearthtentotwelvefeethighwhichhasbeendestroyedthroughconstruction.Itwasplowedandmanyshardsofpotterywerefoundbutwhathappenedtothecollectionofshardsandwhatdetailsthesepiecesofpotterycouldhavetoldushavebeenlost.Alsomentionedincorrespondencesbetween1849and1854wereseveralsmallmoundsontheplantationofJohnRogers.Wehaveverylittleevidenceintheareatodayofthesepreviouscultures.YetseveralofthenamesofCherokeevillagessurvivedinthearealikeEtowahSuwaneeavillagenearcurrentSuwaneeandStandingPeachTreeorpitchtreewherePeachtreeCreekowsintotheChattahoocheeRiverinnorthwestAtlantatheoriginofPeachtreeStreet.AMississippianstampedpottery.
